Web 2.0 Mashup Treasure Trove

Social Networks, Tech Talk, WordPress No Comments »

I am currently researching a project concept to integrate a number of web based Open Source applications. In my googling I came across Mashable.com a Web 2.0 Mashup Treasure Trove. They are currently running a series for WordPress.

  • 50+ Tools For The WordPress Admin
  • AJAX-Powered WordPress Plugins
  • Plugins for Wordpress Comments

With in excess of 4.5 million monthly pageviews, Mashable is the world's largest blog on social networking.

It covers sites like MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, hi5, Piczo, Bebo and YouTube, but also other independent web applications.

First Computer Virus

Virus No Comments »

Those smug Mac adverts, "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" that tout that PC's are a haven for viruses, and some how Mac's are immune, and equally smug ranting of your Mac friends are take one more hit that debate.

The Apple computer has the dubious honor of  being host to the first computer virus as stated in an article on theregister.co.uk.

MySpace Link Grab

Social Networks No Comments »

I've had a profile on MySpace for some time to try and attract some more interest in my art website. Some of artist comrades have also joined the jostle of MySpace crowds. I was discussing traffic referrals from MySpace with one of these said artists, Jon Beinart. Jon runs the now huge website beinart.org, which I built for him, and still maintain. In the day to day running of this site we are often analyzing the site's traffic and how to best optimize it. And so, we were looking at the traffic referrals from MySpace.

We were looking at one profile in particular that had linked to bienart.org, when I noticed something very strange. The link pointed to another site, msplinks.com, but actually redirected to beinart.org. Jon then informed me that MySpace now did this with all Profile links.

Some googling and reading through various social network blogs, told the story of earlier this year (2007) MySpace had all of a sudden applied this mysterious redirect on all MySpace comments in a bid to halt the march of comment spam. While that seemed reasonable at first, some months later, any update to MySpace profile would mean links would be redirected through msplinks.com. This site is owned by MySpace.

What this means is that MySpace has removed any SEO advantage from all external links. A visit to msplinks.com currently reveals a blank site. I wonder how long it will be before MySpace take advantage of the vast SEO benefits. MySpace was already losing my interest, and this hurries it further.
